Does the claim that moral judgements are intrinsically motivating provide a good justification for non-cognitivism? A moral judgement must be linked to some mental process, and according to some theories, moral facts in fact originate from mental processes. Moral judgements seem to stem from a certain conviction, which is easily interpreted as a belief which a person holds about what is true and good. For proponents of moral perception, we get, at the very least, some of our moral knowledge non-inferentially through perception of the moral facts. The most plausible versions of moral perception refrain from making the much stronger thesis that all of our moral knowledge is justified non-inferentially through perception.

He concludes from this that moral judgments cannot be a subset of judgments of fact. In setting up his argument, Kaufman claims that for the most part we form judgments of fact in virtue of natural facts being a certain way, entailing that correct judgments are causal consequences of natural facts.
